Editorial Guidelines for IDevStories.ca
1. Introduction & Guiding Principles
The purpose of these guidelines is to protect and strengthen the bond of trust between IDevStories.ca and our readers, partners, and the communities we serve. They affirm our commitment to integrity, transparency, and excellence in every story we publish.
IDevStories.ca is an independent publication dedicated to documenting and sharing the global impact of Canada’s international development work. Our journalism is grounded in ethical storytelling, editorial independence, and a duty to the public good. These policies guide our team in creating content that is trusted, human-centered, evidence-based, and impact-focused.
We recognize that not every situation can be anticipated by a written policy. In such cases, we are guided by editorial judgment, common sense, and our core mission: to showcase impact, tell stories, and drive change.
2. Editorial Independence
IDevStories.ca operates with full editorial independence. Our content is free from commercial, political, or institutional influence. All editorial decisions are made based on merit, relevance, and integrity, in alignment with our Charter.
We protect editorial freedom in all funding and partnership agreements. Partners, sponsors, and donors acknowledge that they do not influence story selection, framing, or publication.
The Editor-in-Chief holds final authority over all content published on our platform.
3. Accuracy, Sourcing & Attribution
We are committed to reporting with accuracy, fairness, and transparency. All stories undergo rigorous verification, and sources are identified as specifically as possible. Anonymous sources are used only with approval from the Editor-in-Chief and when essential to protect safety or confidentiality.
We correct errors promptly and publicly (see Section 10). Quotes are not altered except to remove filler words or offensive language, and only when necessary for clarity or legal protection.
Photographs and videos are not digitally manipulated in a way that misrepresents reality. Any edits are clearly disclosed.
4. Harm, Sensitivity & Representation
We uphold dignity and respect in all our storytelling. We avoid content that causes unjustified harm, offense, or distress, especially to vulnerable individuals or communities.
We do not publish personal characteristics—such as race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, or disability—unless directly relevant to the story. We adhere to sensitivity guidelines in reporting on trauma, conflict, health, or loss, and provide content warnings where appropriate.
While we do not shy away from difficult topics, we ensure context, care, and public interest guide our decisions.
5. Authorship & Contributors
Our contributors include field practitioners, local journalists, researchers, project leads, and community voices. All contributors must write within their domain of experience and disclose any potential conflicts of interest (see Section 6).
We prioritize diversity in authorship—including gender, geography, language, and perspective—to ensure our storytelling reflects the wide range of Canada’s global development efforts.
6. Declarations of Interest
Transparency is non-negotiable. Contributors must disclose any relevant affiliations, funding, or personal interests related to their topic. Disclosures appear alongside published content.
Failure to disclose may result in removal of content and exclusion from future contribution.
Editors must also declare any conflicts when handling stories where impartiality could be questioned.
The use of AI in content creation must be disclosed to editors and explained to readers where relevant.
7. Editorial Process & Review
Our editorial process balances narrative power with factual rigor. We collaborate closely with contributors to ensure stories are compelling, accurate, and aligned with our mission.
We seek diverse viewpoints and ensure coverage across our eight thematic areas reflects a range of evidence-based perspectives. While individual stories may advocate for specific outcomes, we never suppress relevant facts to suit a narrative.
All contributors retain final approval of their stories before publication, in line with our commitment to authentic storytelling.
8. Right of Reply
We offer a right of reply to individuals or organizations subject to significant criticism or allegations in our stories, preferably before publication. In cases where public interest is high, we may also offer post-publication response through our comments section or a follow-up piece.
Responses must be factual, respectful, and relevant. The decision to publish a formal reply rests with the Editor-in-Chief.
9. Legal & Ethical Compliance
We adhere to all applicable laws regarding defamation, copyright, privacy, and confidentiality. Legal review is sought when necessary, but the final decision to publish remains with the Editor-in-Chief.
We respect privacy and obtain consent for personal stories and images unless public interest outweighs individual privacy concerns.
We do not republish social media content without verification and editorial justification.
10. Corrections & Retractions
We correct errors fully, promptly, and transparently. Significant corrections are noted clearly within the story and communicated to readers.
Full retraction of a story is rare and occurs only when:
Legally required
There are fundamental inaccuracies that cannot be corrected
Ethical or procedural breaches undermine the story’s integrity
In such cases, a public explanation is provided.
11. Complaints Process
We take complaints seriously and address them respectfully and systematically:
Complaints should be sent to editorial@idevstories.ca.
The assigning editor reviews the complaint with the contributor and determines whether a correction or response is warranted.
If unresolved, the matter escalates to the Editor-in-Chief.
If still unresolved, the issue may be referred to an independent Editorial Advisory Board for final review.
Complaints may also be addressed through public dialogue in our comments section or via a right of reply.
12. Community Standards & Comments
We invite thoughtful, respectful dialogue in our comments section. All commenters must use real names and stay on topic. We moderate comments to ensure a constructive, fact-based, and inclusive environment.
We remove comments that include:
Personal attacks, hate speech, or discrimination
Misinformation or spam
Private or identifying information about others
Off-topic or repetitive content
We may lock accounts of repeat offenders. Our full Community Standards are published separately.
13. Funding & Advertising
IDevStories.ca is funded through grants, non-partisan sponsorships, and partnerships with aligned organizations in the development, academic, and philanthropic sectors.
We accept advertising only from partners whose values align with ours. Ads are clearly marked, non-intrusive, and never influence editorial content.
14. Republication
We encourage the sharing of our stories to extend their impact. All original content is published under Creative Commons Attribution — No Derivatives (CC BY-ND). Republication guidelines are available separately.
These guidelines are living documents and will be reviewed regularly to reflect evolving standards and feedback.
